How a skincare brand lifted mobile checkout conversion from 1.8% to 3.4% in 30 days
Lumen Botanics had a beautiful store that lost buyers on their phones. A five-week redesign cut checkout from five steps to two — and the numbers moved in the first month.
Lumen Botanics sold well in person and poorly on phones. Seventy-one percent of its traffic arrived on mobile, but only 1.8% of mobile visitors completed a purchase. Analytics showed the leak clearly: 61% of mobile buyers abandoned at step 3 of a five-step checkout.
The cost was concrete. At the store's traffic levels, the abandoned mobile carts were worth roughly $9,400 a month in lost orders. The brand had already tried the obvious fixes — a new theme, a discount pop-up, faster images — and none of them touched the checkout itself.
Before
1.8% mobile conversion · 5-step checkout · 61% drop-off at step 3 · $62 average order
After · 30 days
3.4% mobile conversion · 2-step checkout · $78 average order · 0 discounting added
02 — The approach
Three decisions, each driven by evidence — not a list of everything that was done.
Cut checkout from five steps to two.Because the data showed the drop-off concentrated at step 3, the account-creation wall. Guest checkout became the default; accounts became optional, after payment.
Put the product's proof on the product page.Because returning buyers already trusted the formulas but new buyers hesitated. One verified-review strip and one plain-language ingredient note replaced three paragraphs of brand story.
Rebuilt the mobile page around thumbs, not desktops.Because 71% of traffic was mobile yet the layout was designed desktop-first. Buttons, type, and the buy box were sized for one-handed use and tested on real phones, not just in a browser preview.

Order value rose without discounting: the two-step flow kept add-on suggestions visible until payment.
04 — What the client said
"We had redesigned the store twice and the checkout was still the part nobody wanted to touch. The new flow paid for the whole project in the first month — and our support inbox got quieter, not louder."
What this means for your project: if your store loses mobile buyers the same way — a long checkout, an account wall, a desktop-first layout — the fix is usually the same shape: find the step where buyers leave, remove it, and measure for 30 days.
